Seven Quick Takes

1. I can't seem to find my favorite Christmasy long sleeved shirt. It's red and white striped and so festive (and a tiny bit tacky) when I wear it under a Christmas t-shirt or really any shirt. I haven't done a full out search yet so there's still a chance it will turn up but it's not in its proper place.
2. I'm hoping to prep our house for Christmas decorating today. This involves taking down the Thanksgiving decorations, locating all of the Christmas decorations, dusting, and rearranging furniture. I think I'm finally in the mood for all that "fun."
3. I'm also hoping to clean out my car and decorate it for Christmas--I have tinsel, lights, and some ornaments. My theme is "Tacky, Tacky, Oh So Tacky." I'm doing this first, as soon as I finish this post and Grace finishes her English.
4. I'm reading a very weird book but I am liking it. It's called, "the mercy of thin air," by Ronlyn Domingue. I just want to take a minute to say that it drives me crazy that I cannot underline the name of a book here on Blogger. I never can decide if I should put the name in quotations or just leave it. The cover of this book has the whole title written in lowercase letters and so I decided to go with the quotes to set it apart. I just want you, my reader, to know that I do know some proper grammar and know that book titles are underlined. Anyway, in this book, the story is told from the viewpoint of a ghost. She died about 80 years ago and she now haunts a young couple and also narrates their life. It's not just about them because she also tells her story and her life alternately with the couples. It freaks me out a little when she talks about things she does when she is with the couple--like knock books off the counter, drop marbles in the floor, etc. I am enjoying this unusual story though.
5. I have a great book that I want to read to my kids called, "Murder For Her Majesty," but am thinking that we should just wait until after the holidays to start. Our read aloud time is limited due to our unusual schedule and I'd like to use that time to read through our huge collection of Christmas books as well as some from the library. I love reading to my kids and always feel guilty when I'm not doing much of it.
6. I've bought myself two Christmas t-shirts in the last few days. I love a good holiday t-shirt and only have one so I splurged. I also bought the kids Christmas t-shirts. It was surprisingly hard to find ones for them in our local stores. I'm sure Old Navy has some great ones but I'm not driving that far. In Target and Wal-mart they only had long sleeve in the girls section. Living in FL a long sleeved Christmas shirt is impractical. I found some short sleeve boys shirts at Walmart but all of them had some sassy statement on them--like "Save Time, Skip My Sister." I can't remember the others but Hannah and Joe ended up getting one that says, "It's All Fun and Games Until Santa Finds Out." I didn't love it but it was the best of the worst. Grace ended up getting a shirt in the woman's section--it's a little big but will work.
7. I've got a really fun idea for our Christmas picture, hoping to do that tomorrow. I have made myself a Christmas to-do list and it is crazy long. I know that we should focus on the "reason for the season" and I certainly do that but it's also nearly impossible to escape the craziness of it all. I am hoping to find a good balance this year. I am actually in a crafty/art mood and am looking for some fun ideas to do with the kids this week and next as part of their school.
Well, it's time to go and get started on the pre-decorating. Pictures to come later...

Multitasking Monday

The kids are in a Christmas Cabaret this coming Saturday and there was a lot to do to prepare so Amanda and I decided to have "Multitasking Monday." She came over pretty early and we wrapped raffle prizes and other empty boxes as props. Then I made a Christmas tree costume and Amanda decorated it while Hannah stood as the model. It turned out really cute and was so easy! Oh, and Landon helped. While Amanda decorated Grace and I worked on belts/ties for the brothers in "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat." All of this took a few hours and we finished up around lunchtime.

After lunch the girls did school (Joe had finished school earlier in the day) and I vacuumed, folded and put away laundry, did dishes, and general picking up around the house. They took a break for us to make a Target run for Christmas t-shirts for a Christmas photo tonight.

Once we got home I spent the next 4 hours making a Thanksgiving dinner. I didn't have leftovers this year which was fine since there were lots of hungry people at H and B's but then I missed them so I just decided to make Thanksgiving dinner again. So, I made a turkey, stuffing (because I cannot successfully make dressing), mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole, cranberry sauce, green beans, and a pumpkin pie. We just finished dinner and the pie is in the oven--I'm stuffed but there is always room for pumpkin pie.

I was busy all day after staying up until 1 am working on a photo book and now I'm about to go flop-bottom so I've postponed our Christmas photo shoot. We were just going to walk downtown and take a picture in front of some fun Christmas lights so we can do that another night. There's really no rush and I may just end up doing it during the day this week. I'd love it if I could get one of the girls to wear the Christmas tree costume and dress the other two in something equally hokey and super cute and then take their picture in front of something Christmasy. We'll see....I bet I could bribe Grace to do it. After a whole day of multi-tasking I'm planning to uni-task tonight and hit the hay early!

Light Ups

The girls got to perform in two different local light up ceremonies this weekend. They did great and it was a lot of fun. I'm totally into the Christmas spirit now!

Wiped Out...

I have been running full steam ahead for weeks and I'm whooped! The only problem is that we are just starting the Christmas season...I am trying to relax and not stress myself out over fictitious deadlines. Like, for example--the tree must go up the weekend after Thanksgiving. I could make myself crazy and do all the decorating tomorrow or I could rest tomorrow and work on it all week long instead of trying to do it all in one day like I usually do. I am also reminding myself that things like Christmas wrapping and Christmas cards don't have to be done right away...again, I create fictitious deadlines for myself. Not this year though...even if my cards don't get mailed out until December 24. I will relax.
Not yet though...in just a little while we head out to our last big event of the weekend. Another local light up where the kids are performing. Should be fun, I'll try not to fall asleep....

Jingle Bell Rock

Thanksgiving and Black Friday

We had some of Uncle Billy's family here for Thanksgiving this year and my girls just loved having new people to talk to...they do take after their mother. :0) They did DSi stuff before we ate and then a bunch of us played Whoonu for a long while. Hannah especially enjoyed this and took a couple of opportunities to embarrass her poor mother.

This morning we were up at 3 and at Target by 3:45. Melissa, Hannah and I shopped last year and we drug Grace and Amanda along with us this year. We all got lots of shopping done and then took a coffee break while waiting for the line to dwindle down a bit.

Then it was off to Beall's and Kohl's where we managed to buy enough stuff to totally fill the trunk and car.

Then as you can see we were getting tired so we all went home. About an hour later Amanda and I both separately ended up back at Target and the girls and I hit Kohl's again too. We were home by noon with Christmas shopping mostly done! We got some great deals and it was a fun day!

Happy Thanksgiving

We had a great day, good food and a two hour Whoonu marathon followed by Apples to Apples and funny Youtube videos with lots of laughs thrown in. The day just flew by. Now, the girls are watching a Taylor Swift special and at 9 we are all going to bed so we will be ready to wake up at 3 am to go Black Friday shopping. We are all very excited! I normally hate to shop but not on Black Friday. I love all the excitement and chaos and crazy people. I don't need any of the big ticket items so there's no pressure or rush. Just shopping the deals. I made my list tonight and know what I'm looking for. I'm hoping to do all of my shopping tomorrow. We've got a busy few weeks coming up and it would be awesome to have most of the shopping done. After shopping we'll probably nap and maybe do some Christmas decorating and then tomorrow night the girls will perform at a local light up. Then Saturday night they get to perform again at a different light up. They love doing these things and I love seeing their theatre troupe perform, they are really some talented kids.
I hope you all had a Happy Thanksgiving, we all have so much to be thankful for.

I Got Nothin'

It is getting late and I've started three different posts but just can't get my thoughts gathered. I had a great day with the girls today--We saw Harry Potter, met a friend for tea, went to the grocery store, and out to dinner at a Japanese Steakhouse. It was a fun but tiring day. Tomorrow is Thanksgiving and I've yet to do anything to prep my two casseroles. I'll be getting up early in the morning. I'm looking forward to a fun day with family and a great meal and then plan to crash tomorrow evening. Maybe watch a movie or maybe not....
Sorry to be so boring!

Too Tired

So, I'm posting because I said I'd post every day but really I'm too tired to post.  I got up at 5:16 am to walk with AnnMarie and had a very full day after that.  You just get an animal butt picture.

Sunday

  • We just said goodbye to our bunnies. They went to a new home today and although the kids are sad they all agreed that it was for the best. Bunnies are really hard to bond with and the kids had gotten really lazy about getting them out and playing with them. Grace was really the only one taking care of them at all and I felt like they weren't living a happy bunny life. So, we've given them to a family that loves animals and has five kids and we are hoping and praying that they will have a good life there.
  • Do you ever feel like all you do is plan meals, prepare meals, clean up after meals, and start all over again? I sure do. I spend so much time in the kitchen and the meals are then eaten so fast and it's time to do it all again. I used to love to plan meals but now that dairy is not an option and we are also severely cutting back on meat I just can't seem to find my mo-jo. Nothing sounds good or fun to make. Today I made chicken enchiladas and cheese enchiladas and tried not to care about all the dairy. I have a dairy allergy but I'm okay as long as I don't have too much. Anyway, my family was thrilled and loved it. They get so excited now if I cook something from the olden days--when I didn't know so much about food and we ate lots of casseroles and meat and good stuff like that.
  • Joe is in the habit of complaining about every meal I make. I think it's rude and I'm sick of it. I am considering not making him a plate anymore and just spreading some butter on bread and giving him that at every meal until he can appreciate the food he is given. I think some nights he'd be thankful for that bread and butter though...like any night that I make fish.
  • I was going to write more but I'm getting sleepy and think I need a short nap...peace out friends!

Seven Quick Takes

1. I've spent a lot of time on Amazon.com tonight shopping for Christmas gifts. I had originally planned to get everyone books because I love books and think everyone else should too. There are some really great books out there about every subject imaginable. I ended up ordering a couple of books but the cool thing about Amazon is that they have much more than just books. And, if you spend enough moola the shipping is free. Woohoo for that.
2. I love shopping for gifts at Christmas. All year long I see things that I wish I could buy for other people, I definitely have the gift of giving down pat but unfortunately, my wallet doesn't allow me to give as freely as I would like. So, at Christmas I get to go crazy (within reason) buying for my loved ones. I wish I could buy for friends too...maybe someday. I have so many fun gift ideas.
3. I had a great Saturday. It was one of those days that I seemed to strike a good balance between being productive and getting some rest and relaxation in. I finished a book--True Colors by Kristin Hannah (loved it!), had coffee with a friend, and thoroughly cleaned my bedroom and got the laundry folded and put away and oversaw the kids getting their "rooms" cleaned up.
4. We have some people house sitting for us over Christmas and I'm painfully aware of the dirt and dust and clutter that have seeped into the nooks and crannies of my home. So, between now and Christmas I am trying to tackle a couple of rooms or areas each week in an effort to make it appear as though I'm a good housekeeper. It's all about appearances, right?
5. I'm soooo excited about Black Friday shopping. In general, I do not like shopping except at Christmas. This is because I normally can't buy much so what's the fun of shopping--I just see a bunch of stuff that I think I need and can't have. But, when I have a reason to shop I just love it and I love the chaos and excitement of shopping on Black Friday. I plan to be in the Target line at about 3:30 or so, I think they open at 4. I'm taking both girls with me this year and they are both very excited. They actually have money to spend since they "worked" last week. They are both thrilled to have money to spend on Christmas gifts.
6. I really cannot believe that Christmas is right around the corner. I have been to two Christmas plays this week and even sang some Christmas carols and done some Christmas shopping but I'm just not feeling it yet. Maybe after Thanksgiving. I think there is a little "Christmas Spirit"' switch in my brain that is flipped only after I pig out on too much turkey and dressing and pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving day.
7. I can't wait to decorate my car for Christmas. I have had fake fall leaves on my dashboard since about mid-October and it feels so fallish. For Christmas I'm thinking lights around the inside with ornaments and maybe some greenery. A cute little stuffed something hanging over the rearview mirror too. Fun stuff! Ollie may not let me make my car into an art car on the outside but I can do whatever I want on the inside. Maybe a Christmasy car will help put me in the Christmas spirit.

Back to the Real World

We got to be extras again yesterday and spent the day in Clearwater clapping and cheering for a swim race over and over and over and over and over. I am looking forward to seeing that particular scene in the movie, not just to see if I can see myself but also to see how they put it all together. They take the same shots over and over from different angles and at different points in the race. It will be really neat to see it all come together. We had a great time being extras and would definitely like to do it again sometime but I am so glad that we only signed on for two days--it is a long day. We were "working" for almost 12 hours yesterday. Today we go see a very different form of entertainment--we are going to a play at the Orlando Rep--"Junie B. Jones Jingle Bells, Batman Smells." I know that there are many people out there who don't like Junie B. because of her use of bad grammar, etc. but I for one love her books and so do my kids. I'm excited for the show, I heard that it was super cute! Tonight Hannah and Joe get to go to friends and family night at a local theatre to see their theatre directors perform in a holiday musical and then Hannah gets to see the show again tomorrow night with Grace and I. It's quite a week around here!!
As far as schooling goes, there have been no workbooks filled in this week or math done but the girls and I have listened to 3 books on CD, learned a lot about how they make a movie, and we have socialized with lots of new people and made some new friends--young and old (Hannah's favorite was a retired star struck woman that sat behind us in the bleachers--they talked a lot). Joe got to go to Gatorland with H and B and also got to go to the eye doctor and watch how an eye exam is done. I would call that a full week of school, how 'bout you?

A Dolphin's Tale

I apologize for not posting yesterday, I guess I am letting down the good people at NaBloPoMo (if there are any people at NaBloPoMo). We didn't get home last night until 10 and after a rough night's sleep, an early morning, a long day, and a long drive I was too tired to string together intelligible sentences. We had a great day yesterday as extras for the movie, "A Dolphin's Tale." Our call time was 6:30 am and with 7 people needing to get ready in a small hotel room we got up at about 5:15. Once we got to the place we were supposed to check in, we waited in line to check in and then went to wardrobe where thankfully our clothes were approved. There were guidelines to follow for choosing what to wear and then you were supposed to bring alternate outfits. Well, we really didn't have much in the way of alternate outfits so I was glad we were approved. Then we went on to hair and makeup. With 400 extras on the set they were not doing everyone's hair and makeup but instead had groups of about 50 stand in a line and then the hair and makeup people walked down the line and pulled people out as needed. Hannah's dream was to have her hair done by one of these ladies so she quickly yanked out the two braids that I had done earlier and made her hair look as bad as possible and so she was picked! She was thrilled, I got pictures of them doing her hair and the final product but I am too lazy to get them on the computer right now. They also did Emily's hair. I had done Grace's hair and the hairdresser loved it--called it a unique style (who knew that the two little half pigtails that I do all the time in Grace's hair were unique?). So, once we passed through these two areas we were then taken by shuttle to the filming location at the aquarium. We never did go into the aquarium, this week's filming is at a carnival outside the aquarium. They had breakfast for us when we got there and we ate while sitting in our holding room. We were probably in there about an hour or so before they took us out. First we were in a bleacher/crowd scene and were placed very carefully. My girls, Emily, and I ended up on the front row of the third set of bleachers--who knows if we will be able to find ourselves in the movie...Anyway, they gave us props--I got a burger, the girls got popcorn and they gave Grace a big cup of RED koolaid. I spent the next two to three hours reminding her not to spill her drink. In fact, as soon as they called "background" each time we were all supposed to be settling ourselves into the bleachers and just chatting amongst ourselves so each time I took a moment to remind her of her drink and not to spill it. It will be funny if that is the part that ends up in the movie. We listened to speeches, cheered when appropriate, and watched and cheered for a fake swim race and pretended to get really excited about a dolphin that we couldn't see doing jumps and flips. This went on for about two hours I think. Mostly waiting while they set up shots. We did get to see Morgan Freeman, Ashley Judd, and Harry Connick, Jr. Also, the boy that was in Marley and Me was there, he is the main character. They were all in the scenes we were shooting yesterday. After about two hours or so of this, we got a break and could wonder the "carnival", potty, and have snacks. The snack tent was pretty exciting--they had different snacks there all day--fruit, burgers, hot dogs, chips, cookies, candy, and it kept changing. Always new stuff being put out. A movie set is not the place to diet. After a long break we were finally called in for lunch--back at the restaurant/holding area where we had breakfast. Lunch turned into a long break as well but in the holding area we at least had lots of things to do. I had brought lots of activities in our backpacks. They took some people out and then later came back for just about 50 more people, thanks to Amy asking we got to get into that group and do more filming. More cheering and clapping mostly. We were scheduled for a ten hour day but the filming ran long because I guess Morgan Freeman had to leave that day so they had to get in all of his shots. We didn't mind, we were having fun and being paid by the hour. By the time we finished filming and rode the trolley back, and waited for a long time to be checked out, we had worked a 12 hour day. Then, we got to hop in the car and drive 2 and a half hours home. It was a great day and such an awesome experience! We go back tonight and spend the night and then do the filming again tomorrow and then we are done. I probably should have just had us do all three days but to be honest, I am glad for a day at home in between to just chillax.

Seven Quick Takes

1. I've got so much to do to get ready to go to Clearwater tomorrow evening. We have to take some paperwork and I haven't printed it yet or even really looked at it. I don't know what we're wearing yet either and not even sure we have what we are required to wear--solid colored summer clothes in bright colors. I need to look through girls' drawers and my own and see what we have. We may have to make a run to Target tomorrow...
2. This blogging every day is harder than I thought it would be. I'm not too into it now and having a hard time coming up with seven things to talk about. Just got one out of the way though by talking about not knowing what to talk about.
3. Okay, so as much as I will talk and dream and threaten...I will never dread my hair. I don't have the courage and that is that. I just wish I had thought of this back when I was in my 20s. I totally would have done it then. Shucks.
4. A good friend of mine from high school is losing his wife to cancer. She has been battling breast cancer for a long time and now it is in her brain and spinal fluid. She is unconscious right now due to the heavy pain medication. It is my prayer that she will be able to wake up enough for her daughters to tell her goodbye. They have three girls...who are losing their mom and it's breaking my heart. I hurt for them even though I have never met them. I lost a good friend in December of last year and this is reminding me of that a lot. If you think about would you pray for them--Jean and John.
5. Grace is waiting on me to play a game with her. We have so many great games and unfortunately don't play them as often as we should. The days just fly by and often I am tired by the evening and need time to just read and not interact with anyone. Not sure how to resolve this one. When you homeschool you spend so many hours of your day interacting with your kids that it's hard to then take the time to play with them at the end of a long day when you've had not a moment to yourself. So, tonight I am playing games. Joe and I already played Tic Tac Chek---a fun chess/tic tac toe game. I'm hoping Grace will want to play something like Skip-Bo--much more my style.
6. Once again I have a fridge full of fresh veggies and time is running out to get them made into something before they go bad. Why do I do this to myself?? I only have about 4 or 5 hours tomorrow to take care of that food and get ready to go. Some stuff may just make a premature trip to the compost bin...
7. Pumpkin spice pudding (from a box) for dessert...gotta go!

I'm Gonna Be Famous

The girls and I (along with Amy and her kids and some other homeschoolers) are going to be extras in a movie next week. The movie is about a dolphin named Winter and that's about all I know about the movie. What I do know is that our call time is 5 am Monday morning and we are scheduled to "work" for 10 hours and we get paid! $75 per day each. Pretty thrilling for my girls. We will be there Monday and Wednesday. From what I've heard, we are in a crowd scene and there will probably be a lot of down time so we are instructed to bring things to do. I have a great book of brain teasers from Mindware and I'll be making copies so Amy can play too. She and I like geeky stuff like that. So, I'm pretty sure I'm going to be discovered next week and become a famous actress and my life may never be the same.

Podcasts

While we were in Alabama I took some time one night to search for and load podcasts onto my iPod.  There are tons out there to choose from and it's a little overwhelming.  Here are the ones I decided on and what I think about them:

  • The Catholic Family--I really enjoyed this one although I only listened to one "episode."  It was just a husband and wife that have five children just talking about various things.  I sort of got the feel that they were just sitting at their kitchen table after the kids had gone to bed.  I am not Catholic but I have some very good friends who are.  I enjoy learning about their religion and kind of hoped there would be more "catholic" talk in this but there really wasn't.  Just normal, christian talk.  I am looking forward to getting more of these podcasts.
  • Deace in the Afternoon--I think this was an afternoon radio show that they turned into a podcast.  I found it by searching for "homeschool."  Based on some of the things the guys said it would not be something I would normally be interested in but the one I listened to was about how great homeschooling is and also had an interview with the creator of Math-U-See.  The radio host was a homeschool dad and there were two other men interviewed and I just enjoyed being reminded of why I love homeschooling.
  • Family Life Today--I got three episodes of this one but haven't gotten to listen to any yet.  The titles sound interesting though--"Growing Love God's Way," "In the Face of Prosperity," and "That Speaks the Truth."  Two of them are by Barbara Rainey, I've heard of her and like her so that's enough info to go on for me to give them a shot.
  • Mugglecast--This one is all about Harry Potter and only for the most faithful of Harry Potter fans.  I've listened to about a half hour of one of the three episodes on my iPod.  The one I listened to was um...interesting.  Basically, it was three guys and they watched the trailer to the Deathly Hallows and then talked about it scene by scene.  Yep, that was it.  Just talking about something they were looking at on their computers.  I guess if I had more time and was more obsessed I could have gone to Youtube to watch the trailer and paused it ever second to better participate in their conversation.  But, I was at the gym and just listened because I was too sweaty to switch it to something different.
  • NPR:  Books Podcast--I am a National Public Radio fan and I am a fan of books so I figured, "why not."  I haven't had a chance to listen to the two episodes that I got yet.  I'll have to report back on those later.
  • Stuff You Missed in History Class--The title of this one got me curious, I enjoy history but mostly if it is in the form of historical fiction.  Not sure why I got this one except that the title of one of the episodes was "The Cinderella of the Harem," and I was curious.  Still haven't listened yet...
  • This American Life--I love "This American Life" on NPR and this one was recommended to me by Kris so I got it.  I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet though.  I'm sure I'll love it.  Who doesn't love Ira Glass?
  • WORLD Magazine--To be honest I can't remember what caught my interest in this one.  I am pretty sure this one is christian based though.

That's it--do any of you listen to podcasts?  If so, do you have any that you would like to recommend?

Homeschooling Joe

After a very, very rocky start to our school year with Joe I have instituted some much needed changes and flexibility into Joe's day. He is not your average kid and at the end of the day (after he's asleep) I am thankful for that. He is unique, marches to the beat of his own drum, stubborn, and crazy smart. After coming very close to giving up on homeschooling with him I decided to change things up and take a non-traditional approach to learning. My hope and prayer is that he is going to thrive AND LEARN as a result of these changes. This is our first full homeschooling week after making the changes and I am pleased to say that we have had no fits or tantrums this week (only two days in...) or in the three or four days that we schooled week before last. Here are some of the ways I've changed things. First of all, the math book that caused so much angst is out of sight. I thought about burning it but there is a chance I may want to come back to it eventually. H and B (my fairy godparents) found some fun workbooks that practice addition and subtraction and we've been doing a little in one of those each day. Only as much as he wants to do and sometimes he watches me do it while I talk out my thought process. Today I gave him 6 SIMPLE problems on the white board and lined up 6 small piles of M & M's, one pile for each problem done. That wasn't quite enough motivation though and I had to become the student while he "taught" me. It took a lot longer than I would want 6 problems to take but they were done and I think during the game I actually managed to explain a key math concept to him. I want to say here that none of this is easy for me. I am very left brained and I prefer to do things much more "by the book." He is stretching me... So, in addition to relieving the math stress, we are also doing more of his other work orally. Like for English the other day--I read his lesson to him, having him answer orally while he drew a picture of one of the sentences. Again, it took longer but it was done without tears or tantrums. We are only doing English lessons twice a week or so. I am also taking time every day to lay on my bed and read picture books. I am combining some of his favorites with some that are educational. He is still doing Wordly Wise every day and doing History and Science with the girls (but I'm prepared to send him away if he gets agitated). He also reads one book of his choice every day. One thing I'm looking forward to adding is "Science in the Kitchen." He loves Science experiments and has shown an interest in cooking lately so this should be another fun way to learn. If only I could clone myself...while I'm doing all of this with Joe I am still juggling the girls' school and when I am finally done with him, I have lots waiting for me that they need one on one time for. Homeschooling is truly a full time and a half job! I am blessed to be able to do it and am thankful that I can tailor my kid's education to meet them where they are at.
