Summer Reading Program

Last year we did Reading Bingo and it was a huge success and the kids can't wait to start again this year. I finally sat down tonight to make bingo cards and realized that I needed to revamp things. I couldn't quite figure out how to make things fair. Hannah reads voraciously and can easily read a book a day, Grace reads really slowly, and Joe is still pretty young and doesn't read chapter books yet but can read pretty much anything. So, Ollie and I came up with a new system. I have a jar filled with slips of paper and on each slip of paper is written some sort of reward. In order to choose a slip they have to have earned 20 points. Here's how each child can earn points--
Hannah--
Hannah gets 5 points for every 100 pages that she reads. She can mostly choose what she wants to read but over the course of the summer she has to read one biography and one non-fiction book and she has to choose two books from this list--
The Sign of the Beaver
Summer of the Swans
Cheaper by the Dozen
Rules
The Wednesday Wars
Evolution of Calpurnia Tate
My Side of the Mountain

Grace--
Picture book count for 1 point
Short chapter books (like Katie Kazoo, Magic Tree House, A to Z Mysteries) count for 10 points, and longer chapter books count for 20 points. She also has to read one nonfiction book and choose two books from this list--
Encyclopedia Brown
In Grandma's Attic
Stuart Little
Little House in the Big Woods
any Dear America Book

Joe--
Little Miss, Little Mr., or Little Critter books are 2 points each.
Dr. Suess books are 5 points each.
Frog and Toad, Owl at Home, Little Bear, and Mouse Tales are 10 points each
Level 2 books (we have lots of those reader books with the number in the corner) are 2 points each
Level 3 books are 10 points each
Short chapter book (not sure he'll even try this one) would be 20 points.

I've added some new rewards to the jar this year. I tried to make the majority of the rewards totally free but some will cost a little bit of money. Also, there are some rewards that there are three of so that they each get one at some point this summer and others that we will all benefit from. Here are all the rewards that I can remember--
Choose dinner
Play a game with Mom
Choose a family activity
Rent a DVD from the Redbox
Free chore day
Do a science experiment
Get a pedicure by mom
Go to a local cafe and play games
Milkshakes for dessert--you get to choose the flavor
Slurpees for everybody!
Skating
Bowling
Help Mom with dinner
Choose an activity to do with Mom
$1 and a walk to the convenience store
Stay up an extra hour
Invite a friend to sleep over
a pack of gum
choose 2 DVDs at the library

That's all I can remember for now. We'll start this tomorrow and thankfully we have a mostly at home day so I imagine there will be lots of reading going on!
