Some Backyard Fun
Random, random, oh so random
This week has flown by. We have had a good bit of home time but still not enough to make me feel like I've got it together again. We had such a busy few weeks that I felt like I lost control of everything. At this point laundry is caught up, tub has been scrubbed, house has been mostly decluttered, school was done 3 out of 5 days this week, a few healthy meals were made, replenished my jar of giardenera, and I've read a book or two. My kids are finally sort of settling back into being at home more but they sure fought it on Tuesday and Wednesday. They didn't know what to do with so much free time. It's always an adjustment for all of us after a season of busyness. I'm very happy to report that all three of my kids are really reading a lot now. More and more often they are choosing to read a book without me making them and that makes me so happy. Right now Grace and Joe are both reading on the couch, Joe finally got the next Calendar Mystery and thinks he can finish it this afternoon. He's got 2 more after this one to read and then he will have read all of the Calendar Mysteries that have been written and all of the A to Z Mysteries. Not sure what he'll decide to read next but someone gave us the first 35 Magic Tree House books and I'm hoping he'll opt to read those. Hannah and Grace never got into them but I think they are good books that teach something while also entertaining. We'll see. I've learned that if it's my idea it's likely to be rejected so I'm keeping my mouth shut. I've decided to keep reading history books to the kids through the summer. There are a few more from the Middle Ages period that I think they'd like. We started the Whipping Boy today. I also got the next volume in the Story of the World series and I'm thinking we'll read a chapter a day on the days that we are just home. I love the way those books flow and we have all learned so much history and retained so much this year. We will be doing American History next year but until then we'll just keep reading through chronologically. We will finish up Middle Ages by next week and maybe we can read all of Volume 3 this summer. My kids already know more history than I knew when I graduated college, it's amazing what reading living books will do for cementing the info in your brain.
I haven't taken pictures all week, not much going on that makes me want to grab my camera. I do want to capture more of our daily life though. Really I want to take pictures like my SIL Lisa does. I love her eye for photography. Lisa--can you train me?? Right now the kids are out doing something in the backyard (Grace and Joe have left the couch after being coaxed outside by Hannah), maybe I'll go snap some pics when I'm done with this. I think Hannah is directing them in some sort of creative thing of hers. She has so many ideas--making music videos, creating a travel journal, coming up with big involved games that center around the Greek Gods, trying new things with photography, etc. Whatever it is that she is all into she pulls the other two right along. I think I'll go spy and let you know what I find....

Show Weekend, iSwap, and a Book Recommendation or Two
We are right in the middle of a "show weekend." To those unfamiliar to what that means in my home I'll fill you in--all 3 of my kids are involved in a local theatre company. There is no way that I can afford to pay tuition for all of them so they are all on scholarship in exchange for me helping out. For years we were involved in a small theatre company and a good friend, Julie, and I pretty much ran the show as far as box office, raffle, and concessions go. When they moved to this other theatre I offered to do pretty much the same thing I had always done and the transition has gone very well. Julie and I are happy to relinquish box office duties over to the other theatre staff but aside from that we still do a lot of it. So, that means--I bake a bazillion lemon bars and half a bazillion chocolate chip cookie bars for the concession stand, I also get prizes for the drawing, and sell tickets for the drawing before the show and during intermission. So, in addition to getting 3 kids ready for a performance, including dinner at about 4:30, I get there early and along with Julie help set up and then work, watch the show, duck out early to prep for intermission, and then work through intermission, watch the rest of the show, then pick up trash in the theatre, bag up trash and find some strong handsome boy (Jonathan) to take it out, and make sure everything is cleaned up in the concessions area. I added a new task to my responsibilities (at least for this weekend) and that is doing the lights during two of the shows. This is highly stressful for me because I live in fear of messing everything up but in reality it's not that hard. I have a script with carefully highlighted cues for everytime I am supposed to push "go." Thank you to Jonathan (that strong, handsome trash boy) for training me so well and making the cues so easy to follow. Last night was my first night and I got through with only 2 minor mess-ups. There is a lot to do physically on a show weekend but in addition to that, emotions run high--I get nervous for my kids sometimes depending on their part, I get excited, I am proud of them, and so on. By Sunday evening I will be wiped out physically and mentally...but exhausting as show weekends are I love them, I love being such a big part of something that my kids are so passionate about. In my last post I mentioned that we were taking the whole summer off from theatre...well, plans sometimes change and after re-thinking and talking to Ollie we've decided that the kids will be in the 2nd session of summer camp. The show they will be performing is "Honk! Jr.," a musical retelling of the story of the Ugly Duckling. It should be super cute from what I've heard and I'm glad we get to participate. So, we will only have a 2 month break but that's plenty enough.
On another note...Two Christmases ago we entered the iWorld--Ollie got an iPhone, I got an iPod Touch, and Hannah got an iPod Nano, and Grace got an iPod Shuffle. Then about a year ago, Hannah bought a used iPod Touch so she sold her Nano to Grace and Grace gave her shuffle to Joe. Today we are having another big iSwap--Hannah is buying a friend's iPod Touch (it's a step up from the one she bought last year, this one has speakers so she can play music without earbuds or docking station), she is selling her iPod Touch to Grace for $15 and Grace is selling her Nano to Joe for $5, and Joe is selling his Shuffle to me for $2. I decided that I wanted his Shuffle for the gym. The complicated thing in all of this is getting them all onto the computer, synced with iTunes but still transferring songs they've bought and stuff like that. Thankfully Ollie has agreed to oversee all of that fun. Now if only Ollie would only upgrade his iPhone so he can "sell" me his old one. That's an iSwap I want to be a part of.
I am in the middle of reading The Cross and the Switchblade by David Wilkerson--it's about a preacher back in the 60s who went into New York City and witnessed and ministered to gangs there. So far it's a great book and very inspiring to see the power of prayer and the guidance of the Holy Spirit in this man's life and I've also been inspired by his willingness to be obedient even when it didn't make sense. It's a great book! I will say that I wouldn't recommend it for kids any younger than 16 or so, there is graphic explanations of a world that many kids don't even know exists yet. I have also recently read two books by Kristin Hannah--Magic Hour and Firefly Lane. Both were great books and I highly recommend them. Kristin Hannah is Jodi Picoultish without the twists at the end. The kids and I just finished listening to Savvy by Ingrid Law. It won a homeschool award and it's well deserved. I highly recommend it as an audio book, read aloud, or just a book for yourself or your child. Great story! I've got 4 more books on my bedside table that I'm eager to get to and I'm hoping for a lot of reading time this next week. We'll see...our activities are done but we have a lot of school I'd like to plow through since I'm hoping this will be our last week of school.
Stay tuned for lots of photos and videos (if I can get it working) of "Camp Rock: The Musical!"

Writer's Block
I haven't been able to think about what to blog about lately. It seems boring to keep coming here to tell all of you faithful readers about how busy I am. Do you really care that I spent my day yesterday doing laundry and preparing lunch, last night's dinner, and today's lunch, homeschooling my kids, and babysitting a sweet toddler? Do you really care that I will leave my house at about 9 this morning and not return until about 7 tonight? I did have a post brewing in my head about how I'm tired of trying to be Supermom. You know--homeschool, eat healthy, restrict TV, etc., etc., etc. I started composing that and couldn't pull my thoughts together. When it comes down to it, even though it can be exhausting and look to others like I'm trying to be Supermom--I wouldn't change a thing and besides I am far from Supermom. Don't even ask me when the last time Joe had a bath was and don't even ask me about how short of patience I am on a daily basis when it comes to teaching Grace math. And please don't come to my house and look too closely--it's a little embarrassing....
Aside from all that--I don't know what to blog about....Let's try a random list--
Aside from all that--I don't know what to blog about....Let's try a random list--
- Just a little over a week of school left...sort of....math will go on all summer and history will go on until we finish it.
- We are doing a co-op next year and the kids will be using Sonlight. As I go through the list of books and check the library website, ebay, amazon, etc. I just wish that I had an extra $600 so that I could just buy all of the books new. Wouldn't it be awesome to get a big box of fresh, new quality books?!? Instead I will carry my list at all times and stalk used bookstores this summer in hopes of finding at least the ones that our library doesn't have.
- Remember how I said in a previous post that I'd never drink coffee again? I lied.
- Joe has been in the middle of reading the last A to Z Mystery--The Zombie Zone for about 2 weeks. He can't bring himself to finish and be done with the series. It's cute.
- Hannah has been doing a good bit of babysitting for some neighbors, let's just say that babysitters get paid a lot more these days than I did back 20 years ago.
- Just a couple of months and I'll be turning 40. I'm actually excited. I'm okay with being 40, I feel like a real grown up (even if I don't act like one) and feel like I'm coming into my own for the first time ever.
- I am also kind of tired of people insinuating or flat out saying that I am not being a good example to my girls by getting my nose pierced. I pretty much always answer with--if they want to get their nose pierced when they are 39 I am all for it. With that said--although I am not a big fan of most body piercings...it's not that big a deal to me if they someday want to pierce their nose.
- We bought an inflatable pool for the backyard. It's one of those big family ones and the kids are loving it. I haven't been in it yet, we've had some unseasonably cool weather so I haven't felt the need.
- The kids' show is this weekend--"Camp Rock: The Musical." I'm pretty excited, I love show weekends. I love seeing my kids perform. We are taking the whole summer off of theatre and I have mixed feelings. I am looking forward to the freedom but will miss being part of the shows. I think the kids feel the same way.
- I'm making kefir almost every day and drinking it in a smoothie...trying to get back to some of the healthy habits that I learned a couple of years ago.

Permission to Loaf
I have a problem, I do too much. I am always busy with a to do list a mile long and if life slows down I inevitably add something. This past week was very busy--something going on almost every day. Next week is even more busy, especially in the evenings. So, for today, I am giving myself permission to loaf, veg, and chillax. The house could use some serious attention, laundry is slowly piling up, I need to go to the gym and the grocery store, and the list goes on....it always does and I'm bad at allowing myself to let things go. For today, I'm letting things go...I started by skipping out on Zumba (sorry Julie!) and sleeping in until 9:30. I have a big day planned of reading. I am in the middle of a Dave Barry book--he's funny! When I finish that I think I'll start a Karen Kingsbury book that has been on my bedside table for a couple of weeks. Gotta go!

May Madness and Summer
Wow--May is crazy, just like December but without Christmas. Kind of like how Narnia is always winter but never Christmas. We are trying to wrap up our school year, only about 2 and a half more weeks. Thankfully we are done with a lot so what we do need to do doesn't take too long. This is good because almost every day this week and half of next week we have to fit school in around some other much more fun activities. We finally have a home day today, the first in 2 weeks I think. The kids have their last show of this season next week, they will be performing "Camp Rock 2." I spent a good bit of time yesterday soliciting donations for our drawing at intermission. Next week I will be baking a bazillion lemon bars and chocolate chip cookie bars. We are taking the summer off of theatre and I know we'll miss it but I'm looking forward to lots of free time. I'm going to really work on enjoying the freedom of summer. I actually prefer the routine of "normal" life and struggle some with the lazy days. I have a hard time getting motivated to do much of anything. I am one of those people who thrive in a busy schedule and I glory in being productive. However, with that said, I'm turning over a new leaf. I will enjoy the summer and I will embrace the freedom. Ollie will be home so I can go to the gym whenever I want, I can read as much as I want, I can get caught up on photo books, I can play games with the kids and go to the pool, I can watch movies even in the middle of the day. If you find me not embracing the slower pace of summer feel free to call me on it. I may even try to like the beach, sand up my butt and all. :0)
Well, it's time to get off the computer and start my day--this is not a day of freedom or laziness. I have a long to-do list...after all, it's still May.
