Update on Life and Some Pictures

We have almost made it through our first week of school for the year. It's been a long, busy week but I am satisfied with how things have gone. I have had the normal bumps along the way (mostly with Joe--of course) but we are making our way and working through it. Grace and Joe are doing a mixed bag of science this year that will hopefully include most of the lessons in the 4th grade Science on Lesson Pathways. The lessons are kind of random but I like that we will be studying a whole bunch of different topics. This week's lesson was on Beavers. Yep, beavers. I told you that the lessons are kind of random. So, as we studied beavers this week we watched a few Youtube videos of beavers building dams and lodges. We also read a very informative book from the library, did some fun worksheets, wrote a short report on beavers, made edible beaver dams out of pretzels, chocolate, and peanut butter, and tried to build a dam in a container that was a complete failure. I'm not sure how FL beavers manage to build dams with no mud, just sand. Maybe there aren't many beavers in FL although we did learn that there are beavers in every state so I assume there are beavers somewhere in FL. Next week's science lesson is Renewable vs. Non-Renewable Resources.

The rest of school went well also although it has been an adjustment. Hannah is working very well independently even though her work is pretty intense. I am proud of the way she has tackled the more challenging work and doesn't complain. She is doing Sonlight Core 100 this year with a co-op. We are enjoying the 3 books Grace and Joe are reading as well. I'm reading 2 of them aloud to them and then one they are reading on their own. Well, Grace is reading it on her own, I'm reading it aloud to Joe. We usually read it right after his fit of the day. It's a nice bonding time once he has calmed down. :0) I love to read and really want my kids to love to read so I'm really happy with this literature based curriculum.
In other news--I'll go with a 7 Quick Takes approach just for fun.
1. I took Grace to a different orthodontist for a second opinion. I had been told a year ago that she was going to need major work on her mouth--probably oral surgery and braces for a long time. That ortho told me that her canine teeth were facing inward up under her nose kind of and would never come down on their own and would have to be surgically removed. So, I went for a 2nd opinion last week and guess what? She needs braces but nothing major. I saw the x-ray and her canine teeth are right where they are supposed to be. They are wedged in by her other teeth and may or may not push through before she gets braces to make room for them BUT they are not up in her head facing the wrong direction. I was so relieved to hear this. We see one more ortho next week for a third opinion and then we'll make a decision. We will likely need to wait a while--maybe a year or so while we save the money. We try to live debt free and we'd like to be able to just pay for the braces up front. We just need to make sure that it won't be a big deal to wait a little while. I don't think it will matter though.
2. Theatre has started back up again. They are doing "Cinderella." This was the 2nd show Hannah was in when she was just 7. We watched part of the video of it this morning and she was so cute, and so little! I love the music in this show and I'm excited that they are doing it again. Auditions are Monday so the kids are practicing a lot.
3. I read the book, The Duggars: 20 Kids and Counting, this week. I enjoyed hearing about their life, we don't have cable so I haven't seen their show very often but like most of America I am very curious about their life. It was fascinating hearing their story. They also believe in living debt free and they have all sorts of stories of God providing for their needs as they came up. I was impressed to hear that after they built their HUGE house they lived for a full summer without air conditioning in Arkansas because they didn't have the money to put in an air conditioner and were waiting to save the money to do so. They also had not landscaped the yard and she tells how there was a fine layer of red dust on everything all summer because they had the windows open all the time. How did that not make her crazy?!? I spent a little bit of time comparing myself to her and bringing myself down before I told my inner thoughts to shut the he*& up. Comparing is NEVER good. Michelle Duggar is not perfect, her kids are not perfect, and her parenting is not perfect. No one's is. If I were to write a book about my life it might sound like I have it all together too. Of course, anyone who knows me at all knows how NOT TRUE that is!!
4. Speaking of reading, the last two books I've read have been non-fiction and about kids and parenting. I can't wait to dive into a good mindless fiction read hopefully tonight. I haven't had much time to read this week and I NEED to read. That escape is what keeps me sane. I'm planning to log a few hours on the couch with a book this weekend.
5. I'm managing to get a meal on the table every night but I am still so uninspired in the kitchen. I got a Weight Watchers cookbook from the library and I'm hoping to find some good recipes. I've decided that I am going to quit trying to eat vegetarian. It's just too hard to come up with meals and right now I need easy and low-carb.
6. We went out to the beach when Ollie got home from work last night. We wanted to see the big waves and experience a bit of Hurricane Irene. I was so disappointed that it wasn't a little closer to us, I love all the rain but we got almost none. There were crazy huge waves though and Ollie and the kids had a ball boogie-boarding in the waves. They stayed close to shore though. We packed a picnic and ate at the beach after they played in the waves. We had meat, cheese, avocadoes, flatbread, figs, and some other fruit. It was a fun evening, here are some pictures...

The boogie boards were hard to control in the wind--above Grace's is flying all over the place.

Above--all of the birds were hanging out together having a little pow wow. And below--look at the sky--there was this weird cone of light amidst all the dark clouds.

7. Here is our little buddy, Landon. He absolutely loves Joe and hugs him all the time when he's here. He also says Hannah now--well, not Hannah but "Na" for Hannah. It's so cute! He's almost 19 months old now.

Photography Fun With Hannah

Hannah spent the night with a friend last night and they did a photo shoot. I love these pics! I can tell that Hannah's style has been influenced by these guys. They are the photographers that did Ollie's brother's wedding. Hannah and I both fell in love with their style of photography. They are christians and the woman has her nose pierced. Love that.

Homeschool...Another Year Begins

On Monday we officially start our 8th year of homeschooling. You would think that after 8 years I would have it all together. Well, here's a big news flash--I don't. Never have, and never will but we still manage somehow. We are trying something brand new this year and I'm excited about it but also a little anxious. Our school days will be very full and I'm wondering how in the world it's all going to get done each day. For a while now I've wanted to be better about school coming first and letting other things fall by the wayside instead of often rushing through school in order to do or get to something. I am thinking that our curriculum will force that priority this year. The kids are going to be doing a co-op for the first time ever. Hannah will be taking Sonlight Core 100--American History, Joe and Grace will be taking Sonlight Core 3+4--American History. They will each be responsible for reading about 30 books this year. Of course some will be read alouds but still, it's a lot of reading each day. They will go to class on Mondays from 9 to 11:30 and while they are in class I'll be teaching a younger class. We will be doing My Father's World, "Adventures in American History." I did this curriculum with Hannah about 5 years ago and really liked it. I have a great class with 7 sweet little girls. I'm planning for lots of coloring, crafts, and glitter with a side of American History as well as some Bible and Science. After co-op on Mondays Hannah will go to a Science class and Grace, Joe, and I will come home and do more school. Then the rest of the week we will do each day's assignments for the History as well as our other subjects. Here's what everyone is doing, starting with Hannah.

Hannah--
  • Sonlight Core 100 American History
  • Teaching Textbooks 7 for Math
  • Daily Language Review 7
  • Wordly Wise 7
  • Apologia General Science
  • IEW for writing
  • Spanish (just a workbook--not conversational yet, she'll retake FLVS Spanish starting next year)
Grace--
  • Sonlight Core 3+4 American History
  • Math Mammoth--Multiplication/Divison 2, fractions, decimals, place value--we'll make our way through every worktext we can in hopes of getting her ready for TT 6 for next school year.
  • Daily Language Review 5
  • Wordly Wise 5
  • IEW for writing
  • Lesson Pathways for Science
  • French
Joe--
  • Sonlight Core 3+4 American History
  • Math Mammoth--every 3rd grade worktext
  • Daily Language Review 3
  • Wordly Wise 3
  • Lesson Pathways for Science
  • Evan Moor Spelling 3rd grade
Those are our plans for now. I have never found a language arts program I was happy with so I am trying something new. Each child will be doing Evan Moor's Daily Language Review and I will teach things as they come up. If this isn't working well then I will look into a different curriculum but I think between Daily Lang. Review, Wordly Wise, IEW, and Spelling we should be fine.
I wish I could say that I was all set and ready for school but there is still much to do in order for Monday morning to run smoothly. I spent no less than 3 hours at Office Depot this past week photocopying stuff and all those copies need to be filed. Binders need to be put together for each kid, supplies organized to take to co-op, my plan book to organize, etc. I have been struggling with the motivation to get all this organized but I am definitely at the point that motivated or not, it has to be done! So, that's why I'm blogging. Y'know, because I've got time to waste. :0)
I forgot to mention a few other things we'll be doing--we read for an hour every morning and we will be reading through the Bible either using the New Living Translation or a story Bible--still trying to decide along with Victor's Journey Through the Bible. Victor's is kind of like a commentary, it provides background historical and cultural info and other stuff. I'm not sure how this is going to go and I might replace it with a life application sort of devotional, who knows but for now this is what we are doing. We will also be continuing reading through William Bennett's Book of Virtues. We are about 2/3 of the way through that so I am assuming we'll finish that this year. And, finally, we are reading a chapter a day in Story of the World's Early Modern Times. I love SOTW and reading a chapter a day will give the kids some of the world history going on at the same time as the American History they are really focusing on.
I can't wait to get started on Monday, I need some structure in my life--goodbye summer!!

A Haircut, a Gift, the Beach, and Planking Bieber Style

Grace got her hair cut today. She's been asking for bangs for more than a year now and just recently decided she also wanted to have layers. I have discouraged the bangs but finally gave in. What she came out with is what you see above. She loves it, I love it and I don't even really see bangs. Can I get a woohoo?? She explained to the stylist exactly what she wanted and the stylist did it. I guess these are called "swoopy bangs." They are there but are mostly a long layer that goes past her eyes and swoops back and frames her face. I love this picture of her. Her only comment about this beautiful picture was, "my nose looks big."
I got the best belated birthday present ever today. My amazing sis made me a framed picture with 40 memories from our lives as sisters. The whole thing got me all choked up and many of the different memories had me seriously laughing. You know, ROTFL. What a blessing a sister is, we have so many great memories together. Some memories weren't so great when they happened but we laugh about them now. See the one up there that says, "The Spider in the Closet." Cheryl and I shared a room pretty much our whole life and this lead to many creative room arrangements as well as many fights. The worst by far, we got violent--hitting, screaming, going nuts--was over who was going to pick up this huge spider in the closet. After our parents came in and intervened it turned out that it was one of those spider rings that you got at Halloween. Funny now, not so much then. Another one that wasn't so funny then but that makes us LOL now is when the ice cream man ran over our dog and gave us free popsicles. The thing was he didn't give us the good popsicles, he gave us the 25 cent red bomb pop. I loved every memory of the 40 that she included--thank you sis, I love it! I will treasure this. Oh and I also got a new awesome cup. I had one before and left it on top of my car and then ran over it when I backed out of my driveway. It was sad. But now I have a new one. Woohoo!

Saturday morning we went to Daytona Beach. We did the touristy thing and parked in a parking garage right in the big touristy section. We played in the waves, hung out on the beach, did some boogie boarding, and got a large pizza for lunch and ate it on the beach. We came home sun-kissed, exhausted, and ready for one more show.

Bieber had to make an appearance this weekend. The kids were pretty excited but he was my date. We even did some planking around the theatre, with and without Bieber. My word of advice if you ever decide to go planking--don't go with someone that is half your size. You'll look like a fat cow in all the pictures. Just sayin'.

See Bieber behind us doing some planking too?

More Honk pics

Honk!, Jr. was such a cute play as you can see from the pictures! Hannah played the British Bullfrog and did great! Grace was a super cute little duckling, Beaky. This was such a good part for her, she was having fun and you could tell. She was great! Joe played the Turkey and also did really well. He was so animated and also had a really big line that he delivered in a perfect little British accent. Unfortunately, since I didn't really know the order of the show and his big line was at the beginning of a scene so I only got half of it on video. I'll post it in a bit.
