From the frozen midwest...
It's Sunday night and all is quiet...I've been catching up on e-mails and a few blogs. The kids went to bed early which was nice. They were tired and so was I. Of course, instead of going to bed, I got on the computer. Typical. I am truly a computer addict. I can't go a day without checking blogs and e-mail. I live life with a continual blog post in my head. I take pictures of everything so I can blog it. It's crazy really but it is what it is. We had a very busy day today. We went out to Ollie's Uncle's church and heard him speak on "The Myths of Parenting." It was a really good and encouraging message. I bought the CD so I can pass it around to you locals when I get back. After church we went to their (Ollie's aunt and uncle) house for lunch. The kids talked their ears off, told them tons of really stupid jokes, played with the dog and spent some time in the arctic out in the snow. After leaving there we visited Nonna (Ollie's grandmother) in the nursing home. I was reminded again how much I want to make visiting nursing homes a regular part of my kid's lives. The residents light up when they see children and I want my kids to learn to love and talk to and feel comfortable with elderly people. We go every year at Valentine's day and sometimes at Christmas but I'd like to go more often than that. Maybe find a resident that doesn't receive guests often and "adopt" him or her. Anyone else up for this?

Hello! :)
I think the nursing home idea is awesome. I spent some time at one at the beginning of nursing school for clinicals and got to know some amazing people, especially this one hilarious 100-year-old lady that was super sharp and sarcastic - you would have loved her. The people there can get so depressed, so having kids around really brightens them up. :)
I'm thinking you should leave your sister out of the nursing home outreach. I on the other hand think it is a wonderful idea. If your kids get comfortable now with the elderly, they won't be afraid when they are older. Glad all is well in the frozen tundra!! Love, Mom
I think it's good for kids to be around the elderly and a nursing home is a wonderful place for them to learn, especially when they don't have many elderly in their own lives. There's a different patience level they need to experience, a different care level so even if they have "attitude" when they get older (as in traffic situations) at least there's compassion and appreciation on a one on one level. My guys always have something to say about visits with the elderly and it opens some wonderful conversation.
I think the nursing home idea is wonderful. I love the adoption idea. I miss going with church around Christmas. Anyhow I would love to join your caravan and visit some homes. That experience really touched Drew. I am so glad you are blogging the trip! I miss you guys! So does Brie :)
I love the nursing home idea. I would be up for that. I never would have thought of that adoption idea. I really like it.
Glad you guys are having such a good trip.
When I was in college my sorority (yes, I was a sorority girl) hosted a Senior Prom at a nursing home. We got to dance with the residents and even had a Prom Queen and King. We all had a great time! Stay warm!
I am totally up for a regular nursing home visit thing. I have been wanting to do this for some time, but the little ones keep me on my toes or sick all of the time. :o(
Let me know if you do arrange something.
I totally had the same thought and even shared my "plan" with Julie. I thought maybe we could adopt some not-often visited, but not drooling and grumpy (sorry, but I know Grace is still recovering and we don't need any more traumatized kids) older folks.
I thought maybe if the kids "interviewed" them every month with a list of easy questions (What was your first car? What is your favorite childhood memory?) it might be a good ice breaker and a history lesson at the same time. Plus, if they compiled that information, it would be a nice gift for their adopted grandparent and their family. (Hey, you could make a lapbook, LOL.)
If you are up for it, I'll help-I would have done it myself, but I need someone to prod me along :-).
Amy--that sounds great. I like the idea of going in with a specific task. Let's plan it when we get home!
